Antonio de Oquendo

Antonio de Oquendo y Zandategui enlisted in the Castilian navy at a very young age and throughout decades of service he held different positions, until he became admiral. He fought more than a hundred combats.

In 1639 in Kent he was mortally wounded, but even with the insistence of his comrades that he go ashore in San Sebastian and die at home, he preferred to take the fleet to La Coruña as he had sworn to the king. He died there shortly after arriving.

During the Free Tour we usually pass by the square that takes her name, next to the Maria Cristina Hotel, where a large statue was once placed in her honor.
